ABOUT ME

Me and Tutoring

I have always been passionately interested in science and math. My curiosity about how the natural world works led me to enrichment projects in my home, school, and community starting at an early age. In high school I won biotechnology student of the year, and I was thrilled to be one of 20 students from 12 U.S. states selected for a rigorous 3-week summer science program at a college.  I participated in chorus, NHS, and sports, and I co-captained 2 different teams. My rescued greyhound, as a therapy dog, and I enjoyed visiting nursing home patients.

My B.A. is in science and my M.S. is in education. In my freshman year of college, 7 of my 10 courses were in science disciplines. My M.S. included a 1-year middle school internship that involved teaching and tutoring. I was fortunate to learn teaching methods and strategies from expert teachers during my internship, student teaching, CT Teacher Education and Mentoring (TEAM) program, and 4 years as a public school teacher.

As a teacher, I created enrichment opportunities for my students.  I took an enthusiastic team to the Yale Physics Olympics for a spirited day of innovative problem-solving and learning. I also coordinated a project where students learned in class about friction in real-world situations, and they then participated in the design and construction for a police department of a device called a “drag sled.” That drag sled is now a tool used by that police department to measure friction at the road surface during accident investigations.

My subject matter expertise is grounded in science and math interests that continue.  I am an active reader of technical literature that spans the science disciplines. One of my favorites is the weekly Chemical & Engineering News. My reading keeps me informed about scientific discoveries, ongoing research, and real-world innovations and applications. I use this information to incorporate real-world relevance into my tutoring to foster interest, reasoning skills, and long-lasting understanding.

I took the initiative to publish an article in a science education journal. The article recommended using real-world local examples of STEM applications to teach science and math concepts to increase student interest, motivation, and problem-solving skills. I also coauthored an academic book chapter describing the use of environmental science data to guide innovations in green chemistry to achieve safer products and chemical manufacturing technology.

Science and math knowledge can make a difference in your life!

Science and math knowledge will enable you to understand and benefit from ongoing advances in fields such as medicine, materials, communications, transportation, construction, environmental quality, energy, manufacturing, and electronics.  Science and math knowledge foster wise professional and personal decision making.

I had the following quote from an internationally famous astrophysicist, author, science communicator, and television show host in my classroom:

"If You’re Scientifically Literate the World Looks Very Different To You, and that Understanding Empowers You."

- Neil deGrasse Tyson

I diligently strive to help my students reason effectively and achieve science and math learning, as Dr. Tyson advocates. To do this, I routinely use inquiry based learning, construct tutoring lessons that ask thought provoking questions related to their learning needs, and build multidisciplinary connections involving what a student is learning so that they can visualize relevant real world applications, which reinforce learning.

My Tutoring

Research indicates that tutoring is the most effective approach to learning. This is especially true for students that do not have the prior knowledge, habits, or academic circumstances they need to achieve their goal. However, it is also very true for advanced students taking difficult upper-level courses while striving to succeed and achieve their aspirations.

I use my training and experience as an educator, the depth and breadth of my content knowledge, and my enthusiastic and nurturing tutoring approach to elevate academic performance, confidence, independent reasoning skills, and motivation.  My goals while tutoring include creating independent learners that have the skills to figure things out.

Building an enthusiastic, trusting, and safe tutoring environment where errors are always viewed positively as opportunities to learn is one of my priorities.

I have successfully tutored advanced students that were not challenged enough in school and I have tutored struggling students with a diverse range of academic abilities, interests, and backgrounds. My students have had a breadth of learning needs, including those described in IEPs or 504 plans.  I have helped students across this wide range of experiences to succeed and achieve their learning goals.

Why I Tutor

I founded The Science and Math Tutor, LLC, “The Teacher That Tutors,” because I love science and math and teaching individual students.

Tutoring consistently creates the most rewarding moments for me as an educator.  Those moments are when students understand new concepts, perform new skills, and confidently improve their grades and understanding of the world.

Tutoring enables me to indulge my enthusiasm and aptitude for science and math to educate students to meet their learning needs and improve their lives.

Tutoring Logistics

  • I currently tutor online and in person.  Online is very effective one-on-one using modern technologies. I have effectively tutored students as far away as Seattle.  I tutor in person in southeastern Connecticut.
  • I typically tutor M-F, but I frequently tutor on the weekend to meet the needs of my students.
  • I have tutored at various times throughout the day, including extensive tutoring to meet the needs of a student in the Seattle area, 3 time zones away.
  • My services were developed primarily for grade 6-12 students, but I have tutored students as young as 4th grade, as well as college students.
  • Please email me and we can then discuss  your learning needs and make arrangements by phone.
  • Tutoring Technology: Tutoring sessions are instructed using Zoom, Google Meet, or if you would prefer, the electronic app Whiteboard Explain Everything. All have a collaborative electronic whiteboard in addition to videoconferencing, but Explain Everything has more whiteboard features (for physics diagrams or math problems, as examples). You do NOT need to purchase anything if we use Explain Everything since I have a subscription, but you would need to download the free Whiteboard Explain Everything app if you are using a device that runs iPadOS, iOS, Android, or Chrome OS. The Whiteboard Explain Everything app is available in Apple’s App Store <iPad and iPhone app link> and in Google Play <Android tablet, Android smart phone, and Chromebook app link>. Devices running Windows, macOS, or Linux can access Whiteboard Explain Everything through a web browser <web browser app link> and enter an ‘Invite CODE’ that I would share to establish the video conference.

Designing Tutoring for You!

It is helpful for me to learn about you by:

– Discussing your learning preferences and objectives
– Examining graded worksheets or tests
– If feasible, working with you on a couple of problems
– I can talk with a teacher if you believe that would be helpful

We can discuss observations, recommendations, objectives, communications preferences, etc. to develop an initial tutoring strategy.

There is no cost until tutoring begins. If you are not satisfied after the first tutoring session, I will provide a full refund.
